How Many Chemical In Carpeting?

Whe you are lying in that plush wall to wall carpeting and watching tv, you are not thinking"Hey, how many chemicals are in this carpeting?" It is not whether carpeting has chemicals; it's how many and do they affect your health? Carpeting is said to have 120 neurotoxins in them. While I cannot find a comprehensive list, many are listed and the reasons they are used. Neurotoxins sound bad because they are. They go through the blood/brain barrier attacking your central nervous system. The blood/brain barrier works to protect the brain. Carpeting has chemicals to: keep mold and bacteria growing(ant-fungal & anti-bacterial); stain proofing; made from petroleum fibers, and treated with bleaches, dyes, stain protectant and antistatic solutions. Many of these substances are banned by FDA as not approved for contact with human skin. Instead, we have babies crawling and toddlers playing with toys on the carpeting. Does disease start early from environmental exposure? Here are some of the VOCs (volatile organic compounds known to be in carpeting.: 4 pheny cyclophexene, toulene and styrene. Formaldehyde can also be found in the carpeting itself and/or the backing. These VOCs can cause: respiratory tract irritation, headaches and dizziness. Some of these are suspected carcinogens. Throw in a cigarette smoking near the carpeting and the carpet has wicked up the 69 known carcinogens and some of the total 4,000 chemicals in cigarettes. It is never a good idea to smoke inside. Who knows what mold, indoor air pollution, and cigarette do to a young body. Other issues with carpeting are the cat and dog will carry substance in on their paws. Vacuums have a hard time penetrating the thicker, plusher carpeting. This leave the bad stuff: dirt mites, mold and milder, bacteria, lead and pesticides. Years ago carpeting was made to be taken out and cleaned. Carpets were cleaned several times a year. This controlled mold and mildew and other biological contaminants. It is time to go back of this type of carpet installation. Over time if the carpeting is not replaced, the backing disintegrate an makes a great place for mold, dirt mites etc to take over. How many years pass before replacing the carpeting? Chemicals meant to clean the carpet ;eave residues in the carpet. More natural cleaners are effective and safer. New building means air tight energy efficient homes. Nothing leaks out of them. Old drafty house have fresh air leaking in. Indoor air pollution from carpeting and the many chemicals we own cause out houses to be 5 times to 100 times worse that outdoors; especially if you smoke. Natural rugs made of wool are stain resistant and do not require chemicals. However, they are expensive. Consider hardwood flooring or bamboo flooring. If you must have carpeting, consider having area rugs. Here are some suggestions for folks that must have carpeting; 1. Buy low pile carpeting. 2. Let the manufacturer open the carpet and air out a few weeks before installation. This is the period of intense concentrated off gassing. 3. Have the carpeting installed to be removed and cleaned. Tac-fast (hook and loop method-Velcro) lets the carpeting be removed to be cleaned thoroughly. 4. Install central vacuum system. 5. Don't let babies and small children play on carpeting. Buy a wool area rug for that purpose. 6. Run a basement dehumidifier. Humidity causes mold to grow in the basement. Mold travels as soon as one opens the door. It ends up in the furniture and carpeting. 7. Run air purifiers to remove mold, biological contaminants, and chemicals from the air. 8. Use a quality hepa vacuum and vacuum frequently. Carpeting in homes has always made me sick. Whether it is in a home or office it affects me. Guess it is time for you to come to your own conclusion. With many harmful chemicals in carpeting, should you have it in you home? References: 1. John Hopkins Magazine, 2001 - "Home Sick Home" - Melissa Hendricks 2. 5 Odd Places To Find Mold

Since mold exposure is bad for your health, you must make sure that all mold in your house is gone.  All houses  have some mold.  You cannot get rid of all mold.  However, mold levels need to be as low as possible.  Obvious mold growth is a big time no.  You can review major places to find mold, for starters:  Basement MoldStop Mold In These Places
Those are the big places that usually occur.  So clean them as if there is mold there.  Mold spores are invisible floating through the air.  When they are visible such black on a cardboard box in the basement, pitch the box.  Today's blog is on odd places to find mold.
1.  The Cat litter:  Think about it.  You have absorbent product absorbing pee that is  warm, in a dark place (usually the basement) and damp because it is wet.  Mold can grow quickly within 25 - 48 hours.  For the double whammy, many folks with mold allergies also have cat allergy.  This needs to be cleaned every other day.  Another tip is adding baking soda to help kill the mold.
2.  The dog's dish:  You would not think of mold in the dog's dish.  But if you clean it every other month, chances are it will accrue mold.  Many dog's let their food in the bowl and do not eat it all.  Dog's dishes also come with a water bowl attached.  That can easily spill and end up under the dish undetected.  Move the dish when you clean.  Clean the dish itself at least once a week.
3.  Rotting leaves right next to your house:  if you leave them they rot and create leaf mold.  Open the windows to get that much needed clean air and you have mold blowing into the house.  Rake the leaves away from the house. Spring Cleaning To Kill Mold
4.  In the Refrigerator:  Food gets moldy also.  The mold on food also causes a reaction.  That mold is Penicillium.  As soon as you open the refrigerator, you let mold our into the rest of the house.  Clean your refrigerator at least once a week.  Pitch food that is old.  Check jars of food.  Start dating food if you are not sure how old the food is.
5. HVAC Ducts:  Condensation can form in the ducts.  These ducts must be cleaned to ensure that there is no condensation inside them.  If there is, when you turn on the heat, you are effectively blowing mold through your house.
Consider that 3 out of every 4 houses have an asthmatic patient.  Some homes have more than one.  It is amazing that traditional medicine is stuck on prescribing medicine and does not access environmental factors such as mold and indoor air pollution.  It is the goal of this blog for you to consider what environmental factors could affect the health of your family.  Do not blow off getting rid of mold.  Do not assume that your child's asthma and allergies are just caused by pollen. Mold aggravates allergies and can cause mold.
The steps necessary to stop mold and kill mold are:
1.  Dehumidify your basement with a basement dehumidifier.
2.  Use allergy air purifiers throughout the house.
3.  Clean all surfaces with Borax.  Pitch obviously moldy items.
4.  Hepa vacuum all surfaces after they have been cleaned.  Purchase a quality hepa vacuum.

Hidden Mold & It's Disastrous Affects On Home & Health

Hidden Leaks Can Cause Black Mold Growth

Hidden Mold Growing In The Wall & Under The Floor

In talking with a health professional, she brought up her fear of hidden black mold. Hidden black mold is one of the worst things for a family and the home.  In one case the family got the leak fixed but it was done improperly and the black mold grew and spread.  The son develop type 1 diabetes.  Another had sever vertigo and had to be carried to the bathroom.  Every person had a health problem.  They saw many doctors who could not come up with a diagnosis.  The doctors suggested a psychiatrist.
The family finally had a mold testing business test their home.  Essentially the house was inhavbitable and they moved.  They put down their 2 dogs to be on the safe side.  They lost their dream home and the black mold definetley affected their health.  Here is a video of the complete story.  Watch it, it is hard to believe what happened.  The Hidden Danger of Black Mold
The contractor's failure to properly fix the leak meant that the black mold spread and family was unaware.  There was no opportunity to kill the mold.  It is absolutely vital that leaks be fixed properly and promptly.  Check your roof and basement often for leaks.  Failure to do so can mean black mold.
Hearing people's stories is important.  It validates that there are major health problems associated with mold exposure.  I have enclosed a brief summary of the mold associated illnesses that I have due to the dreaded biotoxic reaction to mold. My Mold Story Most of us have heard stories or know someone that can't figure out how to kill mold or are worried because their child's asthma does not improve with medicine.  That is a legitimate worry.

5 Reasons To Dehumidify Your Basement With A Basement Dehumidifier

Here are 5 reasons why you should dehumidifier your basement with a basement dehumidifier.  They are serious so pay attention as you too will suffer from these affect if you do not.
1.  To kill mold before it has a chance to grow by cutting off humidity.
2.  Basements are below grade and are wet, dark and damp offering mold a perfect places to grow.
3.  Mold grows in the basement on any porous and non- porous surface.  When you open the basement door it spreads through the house.  It is invisible in the air so you won't notice until it starts to smell and stink like mold.
4.  Mold exposure affects the health of everyone in the house.  Some get hit harder then others.  Healthy people feel lousy around mold but recover once out of the mold.  However, if you never leave the house, you are constantly exposed.  Mold triggers:  asthma, allergies, mold allergies, biotoxic reaction to mold which means that the untreated mold patient is constantly struggling with a worsening mold reaction.  This person lacks the immune response to create antibodies to kill mold.  Other problems:  trouble thinking, memory problems, headaches which can be severe, body aches and pains.  To read more check out the home page:  Can Mold Destroy Your Health?
5.  Humidity causes chemical off-gassing.  Sounds really nasty.  Well it is. Pretty much everything you own has chemicals leaching out of those items with high humidity:  carpeting, furniture, make-up, hobby supplies, construction materials, paints, etc.  Some these items contain known carcinogens:  VOCs  Volatile Organic Compounds;  Toluene, Formaldehyde, Radon, the many carcinogens in cigarette smoke, styrene used in making plastic and more.  Just to give you an idea why use of dehumidifiers are necessary especially in the basement.  Air Conditioners also dehumidify the air. However, too many folks turn them off to save money.  http://www.stopmoldcold.com/behealthy

4 Must Steps To Kill And Prevent Mold

Winix Plasmawave 9500 Ultimate Pet Air CleanerPermanent True Hepa Air Cleaner, 50250Permanent True Hepa Air Cleaner, 50250
There are 4 absolutely essential steps that every homeowner should take to kill mold in their house.  Mold affects the health of everyone in the house.  If you have allergies, mold allergies, asthma or any other respiratory condition and want to breathe better of feel better then these steps are for you.  Read and take action.
1.  Use a dehumidifier for basement.  Basement dehumidifiers are made to handle the capacity or square footage of your basement.  The goal is to lower humidity to around 50%. Figure out the square footage of your basement and then make the purchase.  Consider how cold your basement gets as there are different temperatures where individual dehumidifiers will freeze up.  Energy efficiency is another must to consider.  Mold needs it to be on the damp side to grow.  Mold needs warm, dark and damp.  Basements are usually where mold originates.
2.  Use allergy air purifiers throughout the house.  Allergy air purifiers scrub the air of mold and other biological contaminants.  These are the nasties we all want to get rid of:  bacteria, germs, viruses, fungi (mold). pollen, and chemicals.  The air is drawn into the machine in caught in the hepa filter.  Hepa filtration is 99.97% effective in capturing contaminants like mold.  If you look into the air, you will see nothing floating.  However, mold is invisible.  There are many features that can be purchased in an allergy air purifier. Different Types Of Allergy Air Purifiers/Components: You Must Read This
3.  Clean every surface in the house with Borax or some green mold cleaning solution.  I use Borax as it is easy on the lungs and is effective at killing mold.  Green means you develop the least reaction.  Every surface must be cleaned because mold is capable of traveling through the house.  This ensures that mold is killed on every surface.  Now this means every thing you owned will have mold killed.  Throw out any obvious moldy object like a cardboard box in the basement or wood that is black.  Anything porous in a wet basement is likely to be moldy.  Carpeting in the basement must be pitched.
4.  Hepa vacuum every surface to finish killing mold.  Dead mold spores although killed still evoke a mold response and must be captured by hepa filtration in a quality hepa vacuum.  Hepa vacuum often as mold is always in the house and is capable of growing in dirt.  A quality hepa vacuum should not spew dirt into the air.  If using a cleanable hepa filter, clean it outside or you will be defeating the purpose.
Since many mold allergy, asthma, allergy folks have breathing issues, it is vital that there is no strong odors in the air.  use of perfumes, laundry detergents, cleaning products etc with strong scents can cause asthma attacks.  Think through what you are going to do. Even paint will evoke a response.  Air out the area and keep the asthmatic out of the room.  If you have small children or infants, do not expose young delicate lungs to any strong odors.
So there you have the 4 vital steps to kill mold.  These steps are also the ones continuously done to prevent mold.  Live healthy... Be happy.  You can visit my http://www.stopmoldcold.com/behealthy for more information and purchase allergy air purifiers, basement dehumidifiers, hepa vacuums.

6 Ways To Tell There Is Mold Present

If you are like many people who suffer from mold allergies, biotoxic reaction to mold, or want general health, here are some things to look for.
1.  You can smell it:  Watch out if you can smell it.  It could be something rotting in the fridge thrown into the garbage or can be the furniture in the living room and has spread throughout the house.
2.  Mold Exposure Symptoms:   allergy like symptoms:  body aches and pains, eyes itch, lungs feel tight or asthma attack, headaches, fatigue, mold rash and more.
3.  No dehumdifier running in basement.  If it is spring or the more humid months, a basement dehumdifier is an absolute must.
4.  Basement is wet.  Mold grows in warm, dark and damp places with the basement being one of the most ideal spots fir mold growth.
5.  See black, white, yellow, green or black on the walls, floor, ceilings.  Mold growth can grow on porous or non- porous materials like cardboard, wood, paper, furniture and more.
6.  Folks living there are constantly sick with mold symptoms. They think that they have allergies but have not been diagnosed.  While there can be reasons why people are sick other than mold, mold illness is often undiagnosed despite the volumes of medical research. Many doctors reject that there is something other than mold allergies and they so not see mold as  a problem today. Special testing is required to identify biotoxic reaction to mold.  If you have mold allergies, you can be tested and the tests can be wrong.  Allergists admit that this can be a problem.  Here again are some symptoms:  fatigue, headaches which can be severe, you react each time you visit with symptoms, tight chest or asthma attack, problems with mental cognition like the ability to finish a sentence, memory problems and more.
While this article could go further, I am leaving a few links so you can read more.

Can Mold Exposure Cause Migraines?

Bet you never really connected that mold exposure could cause migraines.  We know that mold allergies can cause sinus pressure and certainly headaches, aches and pains but migraines.? If you are one of the 25% that have a biotoxic reaction to mold, which means your body does not produce antibodies to kill mold toxins, you can have headaches that are so bad that they are misconstrued as migraines according to Dr. Ritchie Shoemaker, mold specialist and researcher. Really don't care whether you call them nasty boy headaches migraines or not, but from personal experience, I do.
How does this happen?  Quite simply, these mold toxins move freely through the body including having the ability to pass the blood brain barrier and wreak havoc on the brain.  Not only can you have severe headaches but also bleeding on the brain if continued to have mold exposure.
So what can you so if you are in these shoes?  First you need to go to a mold doctor like Shoemaker and see through scientific testing and a rather intensive protocol and see if that is the issue. Most doctors and specialists don't agree with this 21st century diagnosis despite over1,000 research documents that prove so.  If so, you really need to kill mold in your house and then take measures to prevent mold.  Constant mold exposure is good for no one.
Leaks must be immediately repaired.  Do not give mold what it thrives on:  moisture and humidity. If you do not have a basement dehumidifier running, get one and turn it on to decrease humidity to around 50%.  Mold loves dark, damp places and is found mostly in basements for starters. Then place allergy air purifiers throughout the house to snatch mold and effectively kill mold because it is trapped in the HEPA filter.  Wipe everything down with Borax and then Hepa vacuum all surfaces.
In the meantime, get treated for the nasty headaches.  They are no fun.  Because mold exposure can interferes with concentration, memory also, it is all the more important to kill mold.  These symptoms come along with the headaches.  Guess the good news is that no, you are not going senile! Even if you do not have these symptoms, it is not a good idea to expose your family to mold.  Could mold exposure cause Alzheimer's; don't know?  But there is still a lot of learning to be accomplished in medicine.
Migraines Are No Fun!

Spring Cleaning Done To Kill Mold, Mildew and Indoor Air Pollution:

Time to do the neverending list of spring cleaning chores.  Hopefully on the list 1st is airing out the house.  Open all the windows and let sun and fresh air in.  Depending on where you are living of course.  If the humdity is high already then leave the windows closed but leave in some sun anyway.  Mold does not grow in sunlight.
The fresh air coming from outside is much less polluted then that chemical, biological congtmainated air in the house. Sit outside a bit and maybe doink around the yard and get some fresh air yourself.  Plan what you are going to plant to further clean the air. While you are outside, rake the rest of the leaves away from the foundation of your home as they will get moldy and blow into the house.  Dump any standing water.  Make sure those gutters are clean and get the one that loves working on the roof to inspect it.  Spring can mean high winds and roof damage.  That is for sure, ownining a home is constant work.
Now for the inside.  Go through every room and clean like a real machine.  Wipe down all the walls with Borax mixture or just Borax and a bit of dishsoap.  When dry, hepa vacuum all surfaces even the ceiling and get all those dirt blobs hanging from the ceiling you cannot reach.  A commercial hepa vacuum is great for standing on ladders and cleaning high ceilings.  Pitch the unnecessary stuff because you will have to clean it and that is just more work.  Spring pitching.  Have a Goodwill box to go.  Mine is full and I am ready to start another one.
Make sure the basement has the dehumdifier for basement running.  If the temperature is too low at night you may need a bit of heat at night.  Clean the basement the same way.  Through out any porous materials like paper and cardboard boxes.  No carpeting as there is no way to keep it from getting moldy.
Keep the allergy air purifiers running and make sure the filters are cleaned or replaced of needed.
Look for anything that is leaking and always take care of that before you start cleaning.  Keep your house clean once you have done this in every room.  This is a lot but makes a big difference over your general health.
Consider if you need to run any more dehumdifiers.  Do this by making sure that the humdity is below 50%.  Use a hygormeter.  They are cheap to buy.
If you have any questions, shoot me an e-mail at stopmoldcold@gmail.com
have a good one.  See You tomorrow.
